It's important to stand up to stigma because being yourself is a protest in itself. We need to celebrate the achievements & resiliency of our community in the face of society, we all bleed the same as human beings. Everyday something has tried to kill our existence and it has failed. In my case, I’m 38 years old & lucky enough to have passed the life expectancy of a trans individual. My trailblazing work has given me the bravery to live openly, authentically and unapologetically myself. This hard-fought progress is also shaping an increasingly accepting world in which peers in every corner of society are standing in support & solidarity with the transgender community. But Our Work Will Never Be Finished Until Everywhere we are accepted and respected as Human Beings. We still face systemic barriers to freedom and equality, such as higher rates of violence, harassment and discrimination. Being yourself in the world is what defines a stigma warrior.
Today as a proud Transman, I stand with the entire Trans Community to celebrate who we are & to make our voices heard! Lets not forget those we have lost along the way, and always remember how & why they died. How many of us have to die before the community recognizes that we are not expendable? I always say, you can jail a revolutionary, but you cannot and will not jail the revolution . My scars symbolize my freedom and being trans is not the only word that defines me, it's what my past has taught me, my life struggles as well as being 9 yrs sober.
My advice to anyone facing stigma and discrimination within their community is to tell a transgender person that you love them today. Our existence and presence doesn't need to validate peoples comfortability, but it validates our respect as Human Beings. Be yourself, be resilient and stand in your truth.
One word that describes me as a Stigma Warrior is Resilient.
